Software Ergonomic Standards provide developers with guidance in the development of usable systems and in the evaluation of the usability of systems. They address the development and evaluation of all types of software.
USER Lab recognizes that a major usability issue regarding software ergonomic standards is identifying the existence of the standards in the first place.
USER Lab monitors the standards development of a variety of different sources and brings together a comprehensive set of relevant standards. It uses this information to teach about SES, to conduct usability evaluations based on SES, and in the development of new software standards for user interfaces.

In addition to participating in the development of various software ergonomic standards, our team tracks the development of standards relating to various aspects of usability engineering. One of the greatest problems in properly applying various usability engineering related standards is being able to identify the set of standards that should be applied. Standards are developed in widely separated committees, which often do not know about related work being undertaken in other committees. The ISO system of assigning sequential numbers to new standards and not providing a suitable key word classification scheme makes tracking the emergence of relevant standards very difficult.
